Chili is one of my favorite one pot meals. There are so many different varieties. But, honestly, I do not know much about the origins of chili. According to punchbowl.com:
“Despite popular belief, chili does not come from Mexico. The recipe has certainly been influenced by Mexican culture, but it also incorporates elements from Native American and Spanish culinary traditions. Many historians believe chili originated in Texas where all three of these cultures intersected.”
Interesting, right? Punchbowl.com continues:
“According to legend, Spanish priests called the first chili ‘the soup of the Devil’ because they believed that chili peppers were an aphrodisiac.”
Double interesting.

No, he didn’t invent the toilet,though he did improve it, and he was a plumber. And with a name like that, how could he not work in the plumbing arts? Starting his career in England in 1861, Crapper would go on to make many contributions to the lavatory industry, including increasing the toilet’s popularity (why some people needed convincing is beyond us).”
punchbowl.com adds, “The flush toilet was invented in 1596 by John Harrington. From the time of its invention up until the start up of Crapper’s company, bathroom fixtures were not part of the everyday household. Crapper heavily promoted sanitary plumbing and pioneered the concept of the bathroom fittings showroom, which made toilets and bathroom fixtures a global success.”
I love that this site even exists: theplumber.com. They clear up some debate: “Myth: The word “crap” is derived from Thomas Crapper’s name.
Fact. The origin of crap is still being debated. Possible sources include the Dutch Krappe; Low German krape meaning a vile and inedible fish; Middle English crappy, and Thomas Crapper. Where crap is derived from Crapper, it is by a process know as, pardon the pun, a back formation.”

punchbowl.com also contributes, “Did you know that the manhole covers in Westminster Abbey still have the Crapper Company name on them? They are a common tourist attraction in England. Celebrate Thomas Crapper Day today and take a moment to appreciate all that he did for the promotion of sanitary plumbing!”
