Today is Alexander Graham Bell Day.
“Ahoy!”
If your reading this on your smart phone, you have Mr. Graham to thank.
To learn a little more about today I found some interesting facts at theultimateholidaysite.com:
“On this day in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. His marvelous invention would come to revolutionize the communication industry and forever spare us from certain awkward face-to-face conversations. Originally, Bell suggested we all say ‘ahoy’ when answering the phone, but then Thomas Edison totally ruined everything by changing it to ‘hello.’ So today in honor of Bell, when you pick up the phone let out a hearty ‘ahoy!'”
Besides the life-altering telephone, we can also pull some life lessons from Alexander.  Here are 5
Life Lesson 1 – Always be developing.
“A man, as a general rule, owes very little to what he is born with – a man is what he makes of himself.” – Alexander Graham Bell.
Life Lesson 2 – Always have a plan.
“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” – Alexander Graham Bell.
Life Lesson 3 – Always look for the opportunity.
“Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.” – Alexander Graham Bell.
Life Lesson 4 – Always build on what you learned yesterday and use it today.
“The most successful men in the end are those whose success is the result of steady accretion.” – Alexander Graham Bell.
Life Lesson 5 – Always single task.
“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus. ” – Alexander Graham Bell.

National Polar Bear Day.

Today is National Polar Bear Day.

Ah, the Polar Bear.  So adorable.  So strong.  So interesting.  (Are we talking about me? I kid, I kid.)

Let us celebrate the Polar Bear today.  But how so?  Let’s look to the National Wildlife Foundation for some suggestions:

  1. “Speak up for America’s polar bears -Polar bears in the Hudson Bay are in danger of dying out completely as global warming melts away the ice they depend on to hunt for food. Speak up to ensure the Clean Air Act can help these bears.
  2. Read all about it – Learn about polar bears at NWF’s Wildlife Library, then find out how the bears are coping with global warming (hint: not well).
  3. Bake ‘cubcakes’ – Get step-by step directions for creating adorable (and delicious!) polar bear cupcakes.
  4. Adopt a polar bear – Adopt your very own polar bear (symbolically, of course!) and help change the forecast for wildlife.
  5. Get crafty with this polar bear snow gauge – Try out this quick and easy polar bear snow gauge craft, a perfect project for a snow day home with the kids.
  6. Plant a tree – Express your love of the Earth and hope for its future with this Adopt-an-Animal polar bear ornament.
  7. Immerse yourself in an intimate portrayal of one bear’s life –Wapusk: White Bear of the North includes images from acclaimed wildlife photographer Dennis Fast, showing the life of one majestic bear in the Arctic north.
  8. Send an eCard – Our free polar bear e-card allows you to wish all your friends “Happy Polar Bear Day!”
  9. Make a donation to NWF – Day in and day out, NWF works to protect polar bears and other imperiled animals. Please support NWF by making a donation today!

If none of these work, give yourself and a friend a big ‘ole bear hug!

“A hug is like a boomerang – you get it back right away.” – Bil Keane.

Tomorrow: Floral Design Day.
