It appears yesterday’s post on International Waffle Day is stuck in limbo on my iPad (6 miles away).  Not a big deal.  I will just have to shoot it out tonight!  No need to worry… there is always a reason to celebrate… which brings us to today – Make Up Your Own Holiday Day!
What do you want to celebrate?  How about yourself?  I think that is what we all should do. Let’s make today a holiday for you!
Happy You Day!  You offer the world a lot, so let’s celebrate the fact that you are who you are.
You deserve to celebrate all that is you!  Cheers to you!
Tomorrow: National “Joe” Day!  No comments on my shock of discovering this holiday!  I truly am super excited!  I did not know about this holiday and now know I need to really plan in advance for this holiday next year!

National French Bread Day.

A lot has happened since my last post on St. Patrick’s Day.
Sunday was Goddess of Fertility Day.
Monday was National Poultry Day.
Yesterday was National Ravioli Day.
and…
Today is National French Bread Day!
I think I’ll celebrate today by making a French Bread Pizza for dinner. But, I could also go for tearing the bread apart and dipping it in olive oil, black pepper, and Parmesan.
theultimateholidaysite.com points out an interesting fact about today:
“Oo la la! Wouldn’t the creator of this day be shocked to find out that baguettes were first created in Vienna?”
Either way, a lot has happen over the past couple of days and we have a lot to look forward to.
Cheers!
Tomorrow: National Goof Off Day.

Old Rock Day.

Crystal

Bling it out!

Today is Old Rock Day.

According to holidayinsights.com, “By definition, fossils are old rocks. Jewelry stones are old rocks. And, coal is an old rock, too. You can celebrate any or all of these old rocks today. ”

I also thought The Ultimate holiday Site by Hallmark had some interesting things t add, “Oh man, the rocks on Canada’s Baffin Island are really old. / ‘How old are they?’ / They’re so old that dinosaurs once used them as marbles. They’re so old they were rocking out when the moon was just space dust in its father’s eye. No, but seriously these rocks have been around for 4.5 billion years, back when the earth was a fiery magma ball. So pay respect to your elders today and tell an old rock, ‘Hey you’re alright by me.'”

Let’s celebrate the old.  AND the new.  As the old brings forth the new.  Either way… let’s celebrate.  Everyday is a holiday!

Tomorrow: National Man Watcher’s Day.

Festival of Sleep Day.

Man

It's time...

Today is Festival of Sleep Day.

May of you who work in the corporate world probably started work today.  As your day winds down you probably wish you would have participated in today’s holiday rather than work.

Well, have your festival of sleep this evening.  In fact, why not every evening?  While I know I do not get as much sleep as is recommended, I get enough.  However, I am actively going to try to sleep more on a schedule versus whenever I’m tired (which some of my close friends, family, and colleagues will tell you is never).  I think a routine would help.

How is your sleep schedule.  If only tonight… take some extra time to celebrate the Festival of Sleep Day!  Today is also Fruitcake Toss Day… so, if you have any fruitcake sitting around – get to tossing!

Tomorrow: Trivia Day!

Put ’em up: Boxing Day!

Day

Time to...

Today is Boxing Day!

But, what does this mean?  What is Boxing Day?

After searching around for a while I figured out that nobody really knows the origin.  There is speculation to two separate events, but as to which one is true.  The underlying principle is it is a time to giving.

Possibility One: As noted in Time Magazine, ”

The best clue to Boxing Day’s origins can be found in the song “Good King Wenceslas.” According to the Christmas carol, Wenceslas, who was Duke of Bohemia in the early 10th century, was surveying his land on St. Stephen’s Day — Dec. 26 — when he saw a poor man gathering wood in the middle of a snowstorm. Moved, the King gathered up surplus food and wine and carried them through the blizzard to the peasant’s door. The alms-giving tradition has always been closely associated with the Christmas season — hence the canned-food drives and Salvation Army Santas that pepper our neighborhoods during the winter — but King Wenceslas’ good deed came the day after Christmas, when the English poor received most of their charity.

King Wenceslas didn’t start Boxing Day, but the Church of England might have. During Advent, Anglican parishes displayed a box into which churchgoers put their monetary donations. On the day after Christmas, the boxes were broken open and their contents distributed among the poor, thus giving rise to the term Boxing Day. Maybe.”

The other version: Also, according to Time Magazine, “The day after Christmas was also the traditional day on which the aristocracy distributed presents (boxes) to servants and employees — a sort of institutionalized Christmas-bonus party. The servants returned home, opened their boxes and had a second Christmas on what became known as Boxing Day.”

Boxing day has always been a time to give, but as the holiday has evolved over time it is more of a time of gathering and celebrating… more-over a roll over from Christmas.

Either way you spend Boxing Day, be happy for what you have, give what you can, and celebrate life.

Happy Holidays!

Tomorrow: Make Cut Out Snowflake Day.

Roots and Chocolate!

Chocolates

Eat it...

Yesterday was Roots Day and today is National Chocolate Day!

Yesterday, I missed Roots day.  I would have loved to mention that it is one of my favorite brands of clothing, how I love root beer, and how nothing is better than winter root vegetables.  However, I was waiting for the arrival of my sister and her family.  Nothing screams the holidays like three boys under the age of six!  Anyway, I was with my parents and preparing the arrival and the day of roots just slipped away.  I guess my roots (my family) kept me away.

But, I’m back today for National Chocolate Day!  My extended family always celebrates the Christmas Season on Christmas Eve.  Tonight, we gather. like we have since I was born.  So many memories exist, but one comes to memory in reflection of National Chocolate Day.  If you are familiar with Whitman’s Chocolates, you might understand my story.  If not, picture a box of delicious chocolate.  Enter my dad and his sister (my aunt).  Ever year they laugh, discuss, and exclaim rules on how to deal with the Whitman’s.  It is all out of fun, but still comes to the table (and the living room and the kitchen) every year.  Rules such as which ones can be eaten first; if you touch it, you must eat it; and if you bite into it and find out you do not like it, you must finish it and cannot put it back (happens every year).  It is a time-honored tradition to debate the BOX OF WHITMAN’S.  One year I even got a 4-pack box for everyone one just to see if it would help.  It did not.  Instead there was a debate about each person’s box and trades/barters happened.  Tonight we will see what will happen.

My charge today: start a fun tradition with your family or yourself.  Your call on whether or not it involves chocolate. (Of course now I remember the childhood tradition we had in our house with chocolate advent calendars).  But start something new.  Traditions bring great memories and give people something to look forward to each year.

Find something to look forward to and cherish those moments as they happen!

Tomorrow: Christmas and National Pumpkin Pie Day!
