(Play) Tennis Day.

Let's Play!

Serve up...

Today is Tennis Day, or for some Play Tennis Day.

One thing that has always perplexed some people is the scoring of tennis.  I did a little research, and according to historyoftennis.net there are two theories most likely behind the scoring:

“The first one states that the scoring has its origins in ancient numerology. In medieval times, the number 60 was considered auspicious or “complete” in a similar manner to which the number 100 is considered to be a “complete” figure now. The medieval adaptation of tennis thus considered 60 to be the “game” with steps of four points like 15, 30, 45 (or 40 as it is today) and finally 60.

The second theory is attributed to the presence of a clock at the end of the tennis court.  A quarter move of the clock hand was made after each break with the score being referred to as 15, 30, 45 and finally 60.”

Perhaps tennis isn’t your thing to do.  If so, let’s switch the game of tennis around on your life.  Is there an idea or something that you have been volleying back and forth?  What side is going to win?  Perhaps make a list of things that may happen if one side wins.  Maybe draw a tennis court (simple as a rectangle with a line down the middle).  Above the court, write the issue you are volleying.  Above one side write, “Yes,” and the other side, “No.”  Now, within the court list why you should or should not serve up this new possibility.

Whether you step up to the court or do a little volleying of your life… Happy (Play) Tennis Day.

Tomorrow: National Tortilla Chip Day.

Roots and Chocolate!

Chocolates

Eat it...

Yesterday was Roots Day and today is National Chocolate Day!

Yesterday, I missed Roots day.  I would have loved to mention that it is one of my favorite brands of clothing, how I love root beer, and how nothing is better than winter root vegetables.  However, I was waiting for the arrival of my sister and her family.  Nothing screams the holidays like three boys under the age of six!  Anyway, I was with my parents and preparing the arrival and the day of roots just slipped away.  I guess my roots (my family) kept me away.

But, I’m back today for National Chocolate Day!  My extended family always celebrates the Christmas Season on Christmas Eve.  Tonight, we gather. like we have since I was born.  So many memories exist, but one comes to memory in reflection of National Chocolate Day.  If you are familiar with Whitman’s Chocolates, you might understand my story.  If not, picture a box of delicious chocolate.  Enter my dad and his sister (my aunt).  Ever year they laugh, discuss, and exclaim rules on how to deal with the Whitman’s.  It is all out of fun, but still comes to the table (and the living room and the kitchen) every year.  Rules such as which ones can be eaten first; if you touch it, you must eat it; and if you bite into it and find out you do not like it, you must finish it and cannot put it back (happens every year).  It is a time-honored tradition to debate the BOX OF WHITMAN’S.  One year I even got a 4-pack box for everyone one just to see if it would help.  It did not.  Instead there was a debate about each person’s box and trades/barters happened.  Tonight we will see what will happen.

My charge today: start a fun tradition with your family or yourself.  Your call on whether or not it involves chocolate. (Of course now I remember the childhood tradition we had in our house with chocolate advent calendars).  But start something new.  Traditions bring great memories and give people something to look forward to each year.

Find something to look forward to and cherish those moments as they happen!

Tomorrow: Christmas and National Pumpkin Pie Day!

Pour some…

Leaves and Bottle

Looks chilly...

Maple syrup on my pancakes!

Today is National Maple Syrup Day.

Whether you brunched this morning or are planning a holiday breakfast, I’m sure maple syrup is on the front line.  Maple Syrup is a staple of breakfast.

So true should be for us in life.  What is your one staple that you always bring to the table of life?

Figure out your staple and pass it around the table.  Share your gifts and you will receive.

Cheers!

My decision.

Pizza

Last night's pizza...

National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day!

What an amazing day!  Everybody loves pizza.  (Except my Dad would demand anchovies). Just think how many different components there are to make your “perfect” pizza.

The dough: Thick, thin, in between, on a tortilla, on bread…

The sauce: tomato, olive oil, alfredo, barbecue, sweet, spicy, fruity…

The toppings: Pepperoni, sausage, vegetables, fruit…

The spices: Oregano, basil, cinnamon, sugar…

The options are unlimited!

And there is always a battle for the best pizza. Either geographical types or across the street.

But just like the options with pizza… so is true for our lives.  Everything that has happened in the past has shaped who we are today.  However, it is up to us on what happens next.  Just like how to eat pizza (fork and knife, pick it up, fold it, add hot sauce), in life we decide what we want to do.

Tomorrow: World Kindness Day.

National Chocolate Cupcake Day: Choose the details!

National Chocolate Cupcake Day

Yum!

Today is National Chocolate Cupcake Day!  But, as with life, we get to choose what our chocolate cupcake looks like.  Does it have chocolate frosting, vanilla, cream cheese, or simply plain.  Do you add sprinkles?  Chocolate chips?  Is the cupcake chocolate fudge, white chocolate, mocha… because what is inside counts.  Just how we choose our surroundings… were they cooked in paper, foil, or with no liner in a non-stick pan?  Hey, sometimes no matter what precautions we take, the cupcakes might stick.  They might burn.  They might be under-cooked.  However, we get to choose how we react.  Life is choice.

Today, my chocolate cupcake is chocolate fudge, with vanilla brain frosting top, in an aluminum liner and optional sprinkles.

What does your chocolate cupcake look like?

Tomorrow: Evaluate Your Life Day.
